I gave them a genuine smile as I sat on the chair that Rome pulled for me. "What a lovely lady!" Mrs. De Luca beamed, her admiration made my heart flatter. "You really have a good eye, Rome." Rome simply took a sip of his wine, leaving no comment at the lady’s remark. "How's married life?" Mr. De Luca asked, his tone light but curious. “So far, so good, sir." Rome answered politely. "It's been a month, hasn’t it? Mrs. De Luca asked with teasing eyes. “Are you now expecting a little one soon?” She might be in her early sixties, but her teasing energy was that of a giddy teenager.

She didn't look like she was lying, but if she was, it was a huge lie. “What do you mean marry. Are they not married already?” I asked once I'd organized this piece of news. “Who, Mr De Luca is not married to anyone.” She put a generous amount of cream into her coffee and I only watched dumbfounded. “I thought He and Anna were…” I didn't even know how to say it so instead I used actions. "And you call her Mrs De Luca.” Rosa picked up her cup while she kept eye contact and took a long sip. “Only because she insists that I do, they had never even dated."

When we can no longer see them, Mrs DeLuca continues with the dramatics. “How dare you speak to me in such a manner, Don Valentino. I know for a fact that your Mamma taught you better manners than this. I am your mamma’s most trusted and loyal friend. Yet, you choose to stand by her, some stray from the streets trying to take our Savannah from us?” She titters with utter disgust lacing her words as she drops her hands onto her hips.

I took a sip, then another, before whispering to the quiet room, “One by one, I’ll make her look like she doesn’t belong.” The words slipped out easy, soft but certain. It felt right saying them out loud. Sarah De Luca. Mrs. De Luca. She walked into that office like she was above everyone, like her ring gave her rights. The staff still treated her like a newcomer, but she carried herself like a queen who didn’t know her crown was borrowed. That annoyed me.

“After today, you’ll be Mrs. DeLuca.” I looked out at the pale morning sky beyond the tinted glass. “All right,” I said. And ended the call. After today, Scarlett Moretti would no longer exist.

A normal woman would have screamed, called her family, or even left, but she was still here. Her reaction to all this was not normal at all. It was like she expected it. Why the fuck isn’t she upset? Why isn’t she causing a scene? Why the fuck have I not received a call from her father or my mother? Did she not want them to know what I had done to her? There was a knock on my study door. I answered with a “come in” and waited for the person to enter. A maid walked in and shut the door. “The young Mrs. DeLuca asked me to let you know that she will be sleeping in one of your guest rooms tonight. She also said that if you are not pleased with the arrangements, I should—”

"I changed my mind." They exchanged glances but didn't say anything else. I ate my mac and cheese, my salad, and every single bite of that chocolate cake while they watched. By the time I finished, my plate was clean and my stomach was full, although I felt a little bit like it was too much, I just know I'd get stomach pain soon. My phone buzzed just as I was dropped my spoon. VANESSA: Mr. De Luca is back. He reviewed your plan and wants to see you.

He turned and walked away, leaving me alone in the garden. Two hours later, I stood in De Luca's mansion in the middle of my new bedroom. It was beautiful; a massive bed sat against the far wall, covered in silk sheets that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. The door opened, and a woman walked in. She was older, maybe in her fifty, with grey-streaked hair pulled into a tight bun. Her uniform was neat and perfect, and her eyes looked at me like I was something unpleasant she had stepped in. "Mrs. De Luca." Her voice was flat. "I am Maria, the head of household staff. I will be showing you around the mansion."

"Now leave, and don't bother coming back until you have the actual authority to do so by becoming Mrs. Luciano Mancini." Laura’s jaw clenched at the quiet humiliation, but she couldn't find a comeback. Turning on her heel, she finally left. The moment the front doors closed behind Laura, Rosa slumped down onto the sofa. She leaned her head back against the cushion and closed her eyes, waiting for the room to stop tilting. After a few moments, she reached out, grabbed her phone from the coffee table, and pulled up Luca’s name in her contacts.

It felt like the heart of an empire where every decision carried the weight of life and death. Aldo led her through endless corridors until they stopped before two enormous walnut doors. He turned to face her. “Before you enter…” She looked at him. “…understand that once you speak to Mr. De Luca, your life may never return to what it was.” Elena gave a faint, humorless smile. “My life ended years ago.” Aldo studied her for a moment. Then he opened the doors. “Mr. De Luca will see you now.” The office was nothing like Elena had imagined.
