He nodded, his expression easing the moment his eyes found mine. “Business. Nothing urgent. Nothing that has to take me away from you.” He said that last part quietly—but with purpose. I knew he meant it. He sat beside me, his arm naturally curling around my shoulders. “What are you reading?” he asked. “A book about newborns,” I said, lifting it a little. “I didn’t know babies cry for so many reasons—hunger, discomfort, tiredness, overstimulation…”

I am in a bit of a hurry, but I brought you something that I think could be of help to you,” he said, and pulled a small notebook from his pocket. Natalie creased her brows as she looked at the book. “What is it?“ She asked. But the more she looked at the book, the dizzier she began to feel. Luca helped her put the notebook into her pockets. “You don't have to go through it now,” he said. “It is something you valued so much in your childhood. Go through it later on, okay?“

He always deemed I should fill my head with wolf history and laws rather than stories of the human world,” he finally replied.

I tiptoed between the shelves, holding a book to my chest, then a voice behind me cut through the silence. “You shouldn’t be here.” My book slipped in my hands. Luca. He leaned against the shelf, watching me like he’d been waiting. “Neither should you,” I said, hugging the book. “Fair enough.” He stepped closer, eyes narrowing. “Funny how you always end up where you’re not supposed to be.” My pulse kicked. “I couldn’t sleep. Midnight’s quiet.” “Or you’re hiding.” I forced a laugh. “Or I like books.” He tilted his head, gaze sharp. “Books don’t explain the cracks you leave behind.”

She slipped it into her gown’s pocket just as the door creaked open. “Looking for something?” Luca stood there, shoulders filling the frame, his dark eyes too sharp, too curious. Bianca’s blood turned to ice. “I… I was looking for a book,” she lied. “Something to help me sleep.” Luca’s lips curved, not kindly. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “Books don’t ease nightmares, signorina. They give them words.” His gaze lingered on her too long, flicking briefly toward her gown’s folds, where the weight of the phone pressed against her hip. For one terrifying moment, she thought he knew.

“Last year, we might have snuck out. A group of us went to a hillbilly bar and got drunk with some humans. They dared us to tip a cow.
