The room inside the projection remained unchanged. The desk. The chair. The window. The book. Waiting. Everything seemed to be waiting. Even the collapsing horizon had slowed. Reality itself appeared suspended. As though the entire system was holding its breath. The man in black looked toward the book. Then quietly said: “It can't be opened by anyone else.” Arthur folded his arms. “How do you know?” The man smiled sadly. “Because we tried.” Silence. Gabriel blinked. “We?” The man didn't answer. He looked like a character from a spy novel, and Anne and Tris exchanged a curious glance. "Can I help you?" Tris asked, trying to sound friendly and welcoming. The man smiled, his lips curling up in a sly grin. "I'm looking for a book," he said, his voice low and smooth. "A very special book. It's not on the shelves, I'm told." Anne and Tris exchanged a skeptical glance. What kind of book could this man be looking for? "What's the title of the book?" Tris asked, trying to sound neutral.

“Was there anything in the manual that could help us defeat the Masters?” I asked 288. He’d read it back to front so if there was anything useful in there, he would know. And now that he had seen the light, maybe even tell me. Hallelujah! The mention of the manual made the imp’s beady little eyes gleam. He looked up at me as I leaned over the partitioning wall and said, “The Book is the answer to all questions.”
