“Trans-Hilton’s Eagles Hall? Bella, that place is… expensive!”
Bella didn’t break her sad expression.
She simply lowered her eyes and tightened her grip on Megan’s arm, carefully playing her part.
“But if you’re worried Julia might get pissed off,” she said softly, still facing her mother, “then forget about it. I don’t mind having a simple celebration.”
Her voice trembled lightly, the perfect blend of innocence and wounded disappointment. It worked instantly.
“That’s nonsense,” Gavin said, suddenly shifting to the edge of his seat. His voice firmed like a man about to deliver a big pronouncement. “Bella, tomorrow is your eighteenth birthday. It has to be a grand celebration!”
