“That’s very Slaughterhouse-Five of you.” For those who don’t know, Slaughterhouse-Five is probably the most famous book by Kurt Vonnegut. Although it’s an anti-war story about the firebombing of Dresden during World War II, it’s also a science fiction novel. Among other insane plot points, the main character and a woman he’s never met get abducted by aliens and put in a zoo on the aliens’ home planet, where the extraterrestrials watch them exactly like humans would watch a pair of chimpanzees in a cage here on Earth.

And they couldn’t know why some people got sick while the others didn’t. But they said, there was something about it that changed the rational part of your mind and highlighted your instinct. It turned them all into mindless animals who try to satisfy their primal urges only. Supernatural zombies were the biggest threat, though. If you met an undead wolf, just run, don’t try to fight it. Aaron said quietly, “when the world collapsed… I didn’t build New Haven to save people.” Natasha frowned slightly. Aaron continued calmly. “At first, I built it to survive. Nothing more.” The wind moved softly through the terrace as he spoke. “People became dangerous after the outbreak,” he said. “More dangerous than the infected sometimes. I watched entire survivor camps destroy themselves over food, fear, greed, power.” His jaw tightened slightly. “Trust stopped existing.” Natasha listened carefully. Aaron looked out over the city again. “So I built walls. Systems. Control. I made rules. I removed weaknesses before they became threats.”

The apocalypse did not start with zombies right away. That would have been too simple. First came the drought. The heat was brutal, day after day, pressing down on cities until roads cracked, crops burned, and people started fighting over bottled water in stores that had nothing left on the shelves. The electricity could not keep up. Power grids failed in waves, hospitals went dark, cooling systems died, and people who had spent their entire lives trusting walls and machines suddenly understood how thin civilization really was.

Going head-to-head with him would only end up with both parties wounded, and this might affect my survival rate during the apocalypse.
