It’s about 4” thick with tissue-thin pages. “The Great Speeches of Ancient Greece by Thucydides” is scrawled across the spine, in Greek. Pushing my wire-thin glasses up the bridge of my nose in emphasis I say “Nerd. Remember.”

When I asked how old he is, all I got in response was a far away feeling of nostalgia and more memories of battles fought on horseback, with weapons that looked they belong in display cases. At dinner I mused over everything Ajax showed me. The pieces of the puzzle all slowly started falling into place. The food book was the smallest of the three, but it had been placed precisely on top of the other two, and Ernest recognized the placement as Don's—the particular organization of someone who had thought about the order of reading. The food book would be third. The essays would be second. The Byzantine history was first, and Don was already a hundred pages into it. At dinner, Ernest said: "Three books."
