He could hold the fire longer than she could. "Sleep, Catherine," he commanded, his voice a hypnotic, subsonic roar that vibrated through her skull. "Go back to the silence. Go back to the maps. The Surveyor is here." He bit into his own tongue and kissed her, forcing a concentrated, ancient venom—the "Blood Sleep"—into her system. It was a heavy, dark narcotic that only the oldest vampires possessed. It was meant to paralyze a rebellious fledgling.

“What’s the cat’s name?” “Jack. His owner’s obsessed.” “Jack, like the one from Titanic?” I ask her. She looks me dead in the eye. “No. Jack, as in Jack the Ripper.” She opens the door, and we finally go inside. The black cat, Jack, is in the hallway, staring at us. “Why Jack the Ripper? He doesn’t seem that bad.” I move closer to pet him, but the cat hisses and tries to scratch me. I jerk back, eyes wide. “Holy crap, this cat’s worse than Amanda with a cross!”

He stepped forward, boots pressing into the earth with a crunch that echoed louder than it should. “Allow me to introduce myself,” he said, his tone carrying weight, like he was on stage, waiting for applause. “My name is Vincent Grey. The bastard son of a lycan.” His lips curved sharper, almost mocking. “Of course, you could call me Vincent Black. But I prefer Grey. Because when you mix white and black together…” His smile stretched cruelly. “…you get grey.”

The slurping sound echoed off the tiles, so nauseating that Arah gagged. Then there was silence. The defeated cat lay still. The bangles unfastened from both cats, shrinking as they hurtled back toward Vienna, locking around her wrists with a soft click. The cats’ bodies rippled, shifting back into human forms. The vampire lay dead, mouth agape, eyes white and empty. Beside him crouched a man in black, his sharp green eyes locking onto Arah. She sucked in a breath. It was the creepy guy from the pet shop.

Cawk~ A black raven flew toward Eagle and Vampire and called them from a distance. Its black fur illuminated under the lamp of fires, and the shining eyes glazed over them naturally. “Your Holiness!” At the same time, a person who was wearing a hoodie with bear ears attached on top of their head was calling him from afar. “Zombie,” he said. “Sister Biebie!” Vampire waved her hand at the girl that was running at them in a giddy fashion.

The click echoed like a death knell. The room wasn’t anything like mine back at home, but it seemed to have been prepared beforehand, deep red velvet drapes, a large four-poster bed, and the unmistakable scent of old blood and hunger. A dark, hungry vampire stepped out from the shadows. His eyes were completely black, fangs fully extended, body coiled with predatory need. “Well, well,” he purred, voice like smoke and venom. “A fresh, unawakened little thing. How generous of your sister to offer you up.”

I could hear his heart trembling in fear from her purr. "Shhhh," she soothed him. "One day you'll thank me for this." She bit down into his neck while running her finger down to his butt and gave it a squeeze. She drained him like a cat that was calmly drinking it's milk. She did it smoothly, her red and demonic eyes running over his smooth face. She wasn't like any vampire I ever met, but her scent was of royal blood. When she had drained every drop in him, she bit down into her wrist and force him to drink from her.
