Blackwood Ridge rose out of the forest like a tombstone. It was a massive hunting lodge built from dark timber and stone, perched on a sheer cliff overlooking the valley. It had only one approach: a narrow, winding road that was currently covered in ice and lined with Iron Hounds. We crouched in the tree line, five hundred yards from the main gate. The army of freed wolves, Ashren’s Silver Creek warriors, and Gregor’s Green Valley troops waited in the shadows. They were silent, grim, and ready to die.

“Let me do most of the talking, alright? You don’t have to act too much.” “Act too much?” I scoff. “This is already too much.” He laughs lightly but doesn’t respond. When we pull up in front of the Blackwood Mansion, my jaw nearly drops. It’s huge... tall gates, wide driveway and lights glowing from every window. “Wow,” I whisper. “Welcome to my world,” he says simply. A butler opens the door for us and as we step inside I spot several people already seated at the dining table... his parents and few relatives all dressed elegantly.

ELARA The safehouse is nothing like I expected. When Damien said "off-grid," I pictured a rustic cabin with questionable plumbing and wildlife on the porch. Instead, we pull up to what looks like a modern fortress disguised as a luxury mountain retreat; it's all steel, glass, and stone nestled into the hillside with strategic sight lines in every direction. "Welcome to Blackwood." Damien helps me out of the SUV, his hand never leaving the small of my back. "I built it five years ago under a shell corporation. There are no public records or paper trails connecting it to me."

Streetlights cast golden pools of light along the way. At the end of the drive, massive iron gates stood open. Beyond them, Blackwood Manor rose like something from a dream. Or a nightmare. The main house was enormous. Three stories of classic architecture, all stone and tall windows. Wings extended from either side, creating a U-shape around a circular driveway with a fountain at its center. Lights blazed from dozens of windows, making the entire structure glow against the darkening sky. “This is…” I couldn’t find words. “Home,” Seraphina said simply. “For over two hundred years, this has been the seat of Nightfall Pack leadership.”

The Blackwood Forest was a dense, ancient sprawl of oak and pine in the northern wilderness, a place the family had used for centuries to hide their darkest secrets. The hunting lodge was a fortress disguised as a rustic cabin—reinforced timber, lead-lined walls, and a basement that contained a literal armory. We arrived under the cover of a moonless night, the SUV’s lights dimmed. Leo was asleep in my arms, his small face peaceful, oblivious to the fact that his mother’s shadow was hunting us through the woods.

Henri’s jaw tightened, but he opened the car door. The drive down the mountain was silent. The forest pressed in on the road, the trees so thick they blocked out the morning sun. It felt like we were driving through a tunnel of green and gray. The village, Blackwood, appeared out of the mist like something from a Grimm fairy tale. The buildings were dark stone, the windows narrow. It was quiet. Too quiet. "I will wait here," Henri said, parking in front of a small general store. "Do not speak to anyone unnecessarily."

I roared. “It wasn’t us, Killian,” a voice called from the back, heavy with anxiety. “We swear on our lives. After what happened to Lucian, nobody is dumb enough to even look at her.” “Nobody touches your property, Blackwood,” another added quickly, raising his hands defensively. “The Lot is completely out of it. We don’t play with written notes and blood. That’s not our style.” I scanned their faces one by one, looking for a single crack, a single flicker of hesitation or guilt.
