My shadow disappeared in the light.
The healer raised her arms to the sky, her voice ringing out, clear and powerful:
“O sacred moon, split flesh from fate. Separate what was from what must be. Bind her soul to the call of the wild. Let the wolf’s breath become her own.”
A cold wind swept through the clearing, whipping my hair around my face. The temperature dropped so suddenly my breath came out in clouds. I tilted my face upward and saw it.

It descended from the Blood Moon like a living thing, pure, white light shot through with streaks of silver and blue. It hit me square in the chest, and every thought I had scattered like ash.
