LAILA’S POV The air was thick with the scent of anger and fear—metallic, like blood on the wind. My heart pounded so violently I could feel it in my throat, each beat a drum of war against my ribs. Blood roared in my ears, drowning out everything but the ragged sound of my own breathing.
