On days like these, I miss them so much. “Are you all set?” Beth asked, walking in. I simply nod my head, and Raven does the same. “Before you leave, I need some of your blood,” she says, making me frown. “What for?” "Well, to create a diversion, of course. The only way to make sure Alec stops hunting for you is to provide evidence that you’re dead; that’s where your blood comes in.” I get what she meant, but I also feel like she left out some other stuff. I wasn’t going to question her, though. She’d already done so much for me, and she was risking making an enemy out of Alec by just helping me.

“You summoned me during a time of blood. I felt it before I even arrived.” I turned and gestured toward the crate still resting there. Raven walked over to it without fear. Her eyes scanned the body of Jarin without flinching. She reached into her sleeve and pulled out a small black vial. She uncorked it, whispered something in a language I didn’t recognize, and poured a single drop onto Jarin’s exposed chest—right where the blood rune had been stitched. Immediately, her eyes shifted. The deep black of her pupils bled outward until her entire sclera was swallowed in shadow. The torches on the walls faded a bit. The wind stopped. Everything went still.

ROXY'S POV "Hello." I make my voice soft, controlled, and cold as the storm raging outside. "Remember that favor you owe me?" There is silence on the line. Then, "I remember." "I am cashing it in. Right now." Another pause. "What do you need?" I look out the window, watching lightning split the sky. Miles is out there, racing through this storm toward the woman who has always had everything I wanted. "There is a car on the road tonight," I say. "Heading from Riverton toward Snowfall. A black SUV, Snowfall Pack plates. The driver is Alpha Miles Mondragon."

I slipped out after him, keeping to the shadows. "Rachel, hang tight," Tyler whispered. "Stephanie's got some health issues. She can't donate yet." Rachel collapsed into his arms, sobbing. Then silence. "She passes," he said. "For now." And all of a sudden, Raven collapsed. Her eyes rolled back. Her body convulsed. Wolves scrambled to help her, but I was already there, holding her shoulders, trying to keep her from hurting herself. Her mouth opened. And a voice that was not hers came out. "The bloodline!" The words echoed off the rafters. "He's going to take the bloodline!" Raven's eyes went white...completely white....and she screamed.

Raven saw an opening as the monster charged at him at close range. Raven dodged the Shadow Wolf's claws and descended faster, his hand searching for a sharp-looking rock beneath him. He quickly twisted his hand and stabbed the monster's head, right through the Shadow Wolf's left eye. Crop! AUUUUUUUU! The Shadow Wolf roared in pain. Its head rose, and black blood spurted out. Raven gasped for breath as he rolled over. His body trembled. He had never fought like this before. His adrenaline was high, the tension between life and death.

With each blow his fingers twist tighter, and tighter around me as my breaths come out in short, gargled bursts. "Keep pressing your luck, Atlas Steele," the madman taunts, laughing between blows "And I'll squeeze the life out of her as you watch. Have you ever seen what it looks like when a person's head is removed from their neck? It's rather gruesome, like popping a giant pimple. It even makes a nice..." My vision blackens around the edges and I realize how little time I have. My poor son, lying on the blanket, must be so scared and confused. I need to get back to him, I can't let this monster win.
