Lucas looked at me like I was deranged. "I really don't know. " I defended myself. I just became a wandering ghost just a few weeks ago. I am not knowledgeable in the world of dead. "Grim reapers don't age, they are like us. They have a long life span. I don't know how they become grim reapers but I know is that some of them lived like a living being. They eat, sleep, and work like normal people. So I guessed they have to follow living being's nature and adapt in human society."

She utters after she gulps down some water, and I just nod my head for her to go ahead, not that she would listen to me even if I say that I don't want to listen to her story, anyway. "That's my baby. You will love it, and I promise..." She pauses and wipes her mouth with the napkin on the table before she reclines on the chair, and I know that I'm in for a long talk this morning. "It's actually a book about grim reapers..." My heart wavers fearfully once I hear that name, but I try not to panic. "It's just a story, don't be scared," I assure myself as I gulp down nothing nervously.

Sweat trickles from my forehead down to my neck, my eyes turn dry when I open them so widely as I watch the horrifying figure walk towards us. I grab Daniella’s arm and pull her close, nervously I whisper in her ear——expressionless skeletal face, long hooded cloak, gigantic scythe, “I-isn’t that the Grim Reaper!?” “Um-hmm.” calmly Daniella nods, it seems like she has some ideas about this figure too. Everybody knows who a Grim Reaper is, if someone doesn’t know about him, he collects souls! He is a personified force of death!

And then, just as swiftly as I had been brought before her, I was pulled back to Earth. I stood once more in the girl’s quiet home, but something had changed. A deep chill ran through the room. And then, the grim reaper appeared again. With a single gesture, he reached out, and took the girl’s soul. “No…” I whispered, grief and confusion twisting inside me. “What is happening now?”

I had four days left before the poison consumed my organs entirely. All I wanted was to spend whatever time I had left with the woman I loved, but I could not reach her. The next day, I learned that Enzo Marchetti, the first love she had never forgotten, had returned from overseas. "Let's get divorced. The love of my life is back." I clutched my chest as a searing pain tore through it. "I'm at the family hospital. I've been poisoned. The doctors won't let me leave.” Her voice turned sharp and cruel. "I don't care if you're poisoned or dying. Even if you drop dead the next second, you need to come back and sign the papers." The last trace of warmth inside me went cold. I answered calmly,

My head was really in pain while thinking about those memories that suddenly showed up. “Why am I holding a scythe anyway?” “What am I?” “A grim reaper--?” My eyes suddenly widened. It feels like everything that I have dreamed about makes sense. My memories suddenly came back.

"You will let my daughter go! Now!" The demon's face crumples in pain and then cocks its head awkwardly, slowly curling his lips into a sadistic grin. A thunderous pop goes off in my head. Instantly, my palms slam hard against my ears. Images of Uncle John and Dr. Mansfield's mangled bodies burn like acid in my mind, the putrid smell of their rotting flesh so strong I can taste it. I double over and heave as I manage to stumble away to a corner, gagging and spitting the foul discharge from my mouth.

A huge guy steps out into the bright light. I slowly look up and down his massive body. "Does he wear thigh-high socks, too?" I ask with a straight face. The nun giggles, her soft blue feathers rustling. The new doctor stops. Where a human head should be, there's just a glowing, neon-yellow biohazard sign floating over his neck. It is totally weird. I am instantly obsessed. "If the Grim Reaper is asking..." His voice is so deep and rough it vibrates straight down to my lower stomach. "I guess I can do anything you want."

My fingers were tapping the table. Soft. But everyone felt it. Message was clear. Still a Zander running this department. Just not Jay. Me. Get in line— or get out. That's how it works now. *** A month after cleaning up Northpoint's mess, I finally went back to Westside. Clouds hung low. I drove out to the cemetery. That abandoned stretch. Followed memory. Deeper in. Found it. My headstone. Black-and-white photo. Half-buried in weeds.

“Grim reapers actually existed.” “Yes, you could say that. Except for the fact that they were visible to all people of the supernatural community,” the Headmistress replies. “Whenever a funeral pyre was erected, a devil would come and stand with the funeral crowd until the ceremony ended. After that, they would collect the soul in a special contraption they all had and take it to the gates of the afterlife. From there they would transfer the souls to the Guardians of the Afterlife.”
