“Can I start ya off with some drinks?” We each order a coffee and then Becky leaves us to peruse the menu. I do not see anything listing squirrel meat, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. When Becky returns, I order a burger (deciding to take the risk of unlisted squirrel ingredients), and Mary Sue—Cali Girl to the end—orders a salad.

"Make it two. I have book club. Possibly three hours. One of the girls is bringing little chocolate glazed doughnuts. You should come!" Her book club has some of the most idle gossipers in Sunrise Cove. I wouldn't risk it. I'm past passing off for bloated. "No thank you. I'll go down to the river."
