I whisper. "Of course not. I have so much time on my hand that I had a fake first edition manufactured and smuggled in here." A teary laugh escapes me. "I don't know. That seems like something you would do just to fuck with me." Adrenaline pumps through my vein like nicotine, racing my heartbeat. The book seems real enough. Hardcover. Gilt page fore-edges. The pages are clean and bright, at least from what I can see. This book, if real, is worth more than a hundred thousand dollars.

"Honestly, it’s no trouble at all. It wasn't exactly a blow to the budget. The campus bookstore had a clearance bin, so I snagged it for about a credit and a half." The warm smile on Patricia’s face turned into a frozen mask of secondary embarrassment. I could practically see the gears turning in her head. It wasn't that the book was inexpensive—it was the fact that I had just admitted to buying the most powerful Alpha in the Kingdom of Valeria a 'peace offering' that cost less than a cup of cafeteria coffee. To make matters worse, I was standing there bragging about what a bargain it was.

'' she paused, looking into my eyes more intently. ''You find another way to recover your eighty million.'' The silence that followed her information was the kind that never argued. “How much will you give me for it?” Kimberly got up from the couch and gave the few hundred dollars to him. “Fifty thousand dollars.” The landlord’s eyes widened. Never in his life has he seen that amount of money. Excited, he nodded to her offer. Kimberly took out the bundle of money from her purse and gave the fifty thousand dollars to the landlord. Before stepping out of the cabin, Kimberly warned the landlord, “If you bailed, I will kill you.” She could because she was that vicious.

I threatened to leave. She forced a smile and handed me a book that contained the available rooms and price range. “I'm going for this room,” I pointed at my preferred choice of room after feeding my eyes for several minutes “How much does it cost?” I asked. “It's twenty dollars and a low-budget room. Unlike the other rooms, it lacked class and standard.” She disclosed. But who cares about luxury anyway? I just need a place to rest my head for the night while I strategize the next morning.

A cold sweat ran down her spine at the thought of MJ backing out at the last minute when she had already booked a non-refundable plane ticket she could barely afford. “You can’t back out now, MJ Billings; it’s way too late for that.” Sonya gritted warningly; she had a lot of money to lose. She did not wait to hear what MJ had to say, she softly knocked on the door and opened it before she could get a response.

They were both taken aback, Cwena looked up at the window to see if anyone was there and Gerey stared at the door, expecting anyone to come in at that moment. “I'm the book you dolts!” the book said in a boring, matter-of-fact voice, “you didn't expect me to be a dumb book that bears the tickles of an inked feather tingling on its pages do ya?!” “Uhm, no - no. Not at all,” Cwena put in mildly, trying hard to hide the look of disbelief at what she could see right before her, on the gathered hay. The book remained silent, twisting its lips like a female putting on a gloss, “Well, I'm Cwena Engow, and this is Gerey -”

“This could change everything for you.” “It’s not just about money,” I shot back, my voice shaking slightly. “I won’t lose myself in this… whatever it is you want.” He studied me for a moment, trying to understand why I was so resistant. Did he really believe that taking his offer would mean losing myself? Just then, Sam rushed over, her eyes wide with worry. “Evelyn! You can’t be serious!” I turned to my friend, torn between joy and fear. “Think about it!” Sam urged. “He’s a billionaire! This is dangerous!”

"Let's get down to business. You're here for the money, and I'm here for...well, let's just say you're a means to an end." Isabella's eyes widened, hurt by his blunt words. James sneered. "Don't play coy, Isabella. You were desperate for that money." Isabella's face burned. "James, that's not—" He interrupted, his tone condescending. "Don't deny it, Isabella. I'm sure you've used part of the money I gave you to pay for your sister's surgery, and you were drowning in debt." Isabella's eyes stung with tears. James's gaze turned glacial. "And don't think for a second you can back out now. You're in this too deep."

Clearly, you don't,” I said waving my hand around her tiny apartment. “Was this some ploy to trick me into paying for your secret life?” As the words came out, I regretted them. But I wanted everything in the open. I’d been with gold diggers before, and while Rainey didn’t act like one at all, in fact, she acted quite the opposite most of the time, I had to get everything out in the open.
