I cast my books aside and piled them neatly on my desk. “Becky?” I prompted my assistant. “I think we’re done for the day.” Becky looked up over her book and then glanced at the clock. “That went by quickly,” she noted, and then she closed the book and gestured to me with it. “If it’s okay with you, I might take this with me. Maybe read ahead and see if it could be of any use?” “Totally fine by me,” I said. “Just make sure you’re getting some rest, okay?”

In her hands, she held a worn leather-bound book that was basically about understanding the power of herbs and how to make good use of their potential. The cover was cracked from use, and inside, faint notes were scribbled in the margins by a former reader: Becca. Kaelyn ran a finger along one of the annotated pages, where Becca had underlined a passage and written in soft, slanted handwriting: “Use golden thistle only at night. It reacts better to moonlight.” A faint smile ghosted across Kaelyn’s lips as she traced those words again. She had been skeptical at first when Becca had recommended the book—partly because she hadn't thought Becca cared enough to share something so personal.

I noticed how Zeke was looking over Becka’s shoulder while she didn’t even look at him. "There is a place near the museum that is very nice, they make live music and I highly recommend it," Becka said in front of me as she turned her head to look over my shoulder. "I’m fine with anything." I’ll roll my shoulders. "I agree with the lady here," Zeke said, winking as I rolled my eyes exasperated. "Then I’ll see you there," I said.

said Becky. “Okay, I’ll talk to you in the morning. Bye. Love you,” I said, blowing a kiss. “Love you too,” said Becky and hung up. I took a deep breath. Without Becky on the phone, it all felt eerie. My friend had suggested alcohol, so that’s what I went for. After consuming a glass of wine, I returned to my room and settled on the bed after switching the lights off. A few scented candles provided enough light to make things a bit comfortable.

Tanner muttered, brushing his hands off. “Maybe we should open the doors to the rooms we think are empty, and the others will come out,” Becky added. She had her Glock by the side of her face, and when Paul glanced back to look at her, he could see she was nervous. He couldn’t blame her; he was too, and he couldn’t even die at the hand of these freaks, though he wasn’t all that sure that was a positive after his last trip to the asylum.

We’ve been friends since high school.” “Nice to meet you,” Glenn said as he extended his hand to her. “Nice to meet you,” Beverly said as she shook his hand. “So how do you know Bruce?” Glenn asked. “I’m friends with both his sister-in-laws,” she answered. “Speaking of that, Bruce I’m glad I ran into you. I need to talk to you about . . . them.” “Well, right now isn’t a good –” Bruce began. “Hey, it’s no big deal. I’ll take a quick walk around the track while you two talk,” Glenn said as he stood up from the bench.
