“We’re glad you could make it.” The next hour was tense, but we managed to keep Gray distracted. We made small talk, introduced him to other guests, and kept the conversation light. All the while, Nicholas and I kept an eye trained on the door at all times, waiting for Noah to return. “Well,” Gray finally said, yawning—yawning—in show of how bored he’d grown of our conversation about tariffs, “I must go. *Grayson* I leaned into the leather armchair, cradling the worn book about werewolf lore in my hands. Reading about myths and stories about my kind was one of my favorite past times. I would usually spend hours in my bedroom, reading one book after the other but after rediscovering my sanctuary, I couldn't help visiting the study whenever I wanted to read. I tried to focus on the words before me but my mind, however, kept drifting to Keera.

There were six of them. I crossed my arms and took a long step back. That first man, who had a hay fork slammed through his bottom jaw and up into his skull tipped backward. Gray ripped it free as he fell and rounded to throw it like a spear at a man that was running at us from the left. Another on the far right was easing behind us to make a grab for me. Gray dived that direction and snatched the man by his collar. Ripping the sword from the sheath at the man’s side and running him through.

I wasn’t even sure if he’d gotten everything settled with his frat brothers when he drove me to the airport in the morning. I tried to let those thoughts fade away while on my flight home. I put in my earbuds and decided to listen to one of the smutty werewolf audio books Hana has gotten me hooked on, Alpha Gray by CJ Primer, with Theo and Maddie as narrators. The book is HOT, and Theo’s voice… yeah, it makes for an enjoyable two-and-a-half-hour flight. I love how he changes his voice when speaking for each Alpha. Hana told me they’ve done the narration for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to listen.

I looked down at my right hand, tracing the skin where Tristan’s thumb had brushed my jaw earlier. He was a terrifying man and for the first time, he was the one person I couldn't read. When he had lifted my chin and commanded me to look at him, my breath had hitched in my throat. I had felt genuine fear in that moment, knowing that my life rested entirely in the hands of a ruler known across the territory as ruthless and cold. Yet, despite the coldness in his eyes, there was something else —a dark, brooding intensity that made my skin prickle.

My heart beats fast, and I feel a wetness between my legs that I can’t ignore. One gray afternoon, it was pouring rain outside. The library was dead empty. No one to bother me. I locked the front door early and turned the sign to closed. My hands were sweaty as I picked out my four favorite books from the back shelf. There was the pirate story with Captain Thorne, a tough guy who sails the seas and takes what he wants. Then the vampire book with Lord Draven, all dark and mysterious, with eyes that pull you in. Next, the cowboy tale with Buck, rough and ready from the wild west. And finally, the barbarian adventure with Garrick, a big brute who fights with his hands and conquers everything. E

The Reapers have handled plenty more, I'm sure. But that doesn't bother me one damn bit. If anything? I'm grateful my man's out there handling the monsters. Because half the time, the so-called justice system can't be bothered to lift a finger. If that makes me ride-or-die with a killer, then so be it. I'd rather stand next to him with my eyes open than play blind to the sickness crawling through this world. I glance across the table, my voice gentler but firm. "Gray, you know I'm not scared of what you do. If anything, I'd rather be with a man who actually handles business than sit here pretending shit like that doesn't exist."

Popping open the buttons again, I grabbed a random book from the pile and knocked on the door. “Sorry to disturb you, but I seem to have a problem with…” I cast a cursory look at the book I’d grabbed and was appalled to see it was a literature book, “…this book.” He arched his brow. “Time to kill" by John Grisham . I got it because I was told it’s one of the books in this year’s syllabus, even though I wasn’t sure if Literature is one of the subjects you’re interested in. I haven’t read it though, so I might not be of much help.”
