She brought me her favorite book, the one about the rabbit who lost his watch, and climbed into my lap with the expectation that I would read it the way I always did, with voices and sound effects and tickles at the end.
I read it. I did the voices. I tickled her belly when the rabbit found his watch under the bed. She laughed, the way she always did, and the sound broke something open in my chest.
I held her tighter. Longer. Pressed my face into her hair and breathed her in.
"Mama," she said, patting my cheek. "Mama okay?"
"I'm okay, baby. Mama's okay."
She didn't believe me. I could see it in her eyes, the way she was studying my face, the way she was trying to understand something she did
