Books Written By Harper Lee Novels & Stories

I donated a dozen books from the Barlowe house—stories I wanted other young girls to find: Jane Eyre, Little Women, The Secret Life of Bees, Becoming, The House on Mango Street, and more. Books that had whispered to me when the world was too loud. Books that had taught me what a woman could be. Mrs. Bertram smiled as she scanned the titles. “This will change someone’s life,” she said. I nodded. “That’s the goal.” I stopped at the market afterward for fresh apples and ginger chews. A few people I knew offered kind smiles, congratulations, warm nods. The town had softened. The whispers had quieted. And even when they hadn’t… I no longer let them land.

Sabeerah brought them out one by one. Muslim Girl and If I Speak by Umm Zakiyyah, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, Three Daughters Of Eve by Elif Shafak, On Black Sister's Street by Chika Unigwe, And Then There Was None by Agatha Christie, A Time To Kill by John Grisham and finally, A History Of The Wives Of Prophet Muhammad by Umam Kahn. She picked up the last book which was actually a journal and tucked in its side were plack pencils with bookish scribbles on them.

I put my bag down on the floor before I sat down, crossing both of my legs before comfortably leaning on the shelf to read the back part of this hardbound book. “To kill a mockingbird…” I trailed first before reading the next part of the blurb. "The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy, Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill a Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill a Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior-

“You know, it’s about an innocent man who gets let off because of this amazing lawyer?” “It’s not a happy ending,” said Alex, mournfully. He moved away. “So why’s this in here?” I frowned. “Oh,” he said, coming back. “It’s signed by Harper Lee. First Edition.” “Is that rare?” “Not so rare. But—” Alex said, reaching under the table and pressing a button. The door on the glass case unlocked. “Take a look.” I opened it up. “To J.F.K. from Harper Lee.” My eyes widened.

His eyes never left my face, and I just couldn't bring myself to stare back at him. I was about to leave when I spotted the book he was reading from the corner of my eyes. He had closed the book when I walked in, so I saw the cover and title, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I looked up at him in astonishment, "I didn't think you would be interested in classic literature."

Maybe if he asked me nicely- No. I shook my head and focused my eyes back on the book in my hands. We can’t go there, I won’t agree to him touching me even if he asks me nicely. Over my dead body. Yeah, I convinced myself, over my dead freaking beautiful body! The cold breeze of fall was knocking on the glass door by the balcony as I read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I asked the kind lady to lend me some books and she told me how big the library is in this estate. She even persuaded me to go out of this room but I declined.
