His fingers tapped lightly against the page like his body had too much energy and nowhere to put it.

No response.

He looked up this time. “What?”
“You’re not reading.”
“Yes, I am.”
“You’ve been on the same line for two minutes.”
He held my gaze.
Then—
A breath.
Sharp.
“Okay,” he muttered, closing the book.
There it was.
The crack.
“What?” I asked, leaning forward slightly.
He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling like he’d been holding something in too long.
“This,” he said, gesturing vaguely between us. “You sitting there like nothing happened.”
