Chapter 72 Nina’s POV The bald man—whose name turned out to be Kim K, which made me bite the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing—didn’t waste time. He snapped his fingers twice. Sharp. Two girls appeared from a side door like they’d been waiting. Both tall. Both in black leggings and crop tops. One with pink hair, the other with a tight braid. They looked me over quick, no smiles, just business. “Full package,” Kim K said. “Wax. Massage. Nails. Hair. Lashes. Brows. Everything. Make her look expensive. Expensive and dangerous.”

"Let's open it first," Nicole muttered, escaping her question, and with the tip of her index finger, she slid over the longest root and paused at the edge before cracking it with a press. Slowly, the other roots started moving and after a few seconds, they disappeared, earning a surprised scowl from Scarlett, "This is... Pure sorcery!" I watched for a moment, the nerves building in my chest. A gentle tap on my shoulder pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to see a woman with a smile as bright as her makeup kit. "Hi May, I'm Tessa. I'll be doing your nails and toes." she said, motioning me toward a chair. As I took a seat, Tessa began working her magic, her fingers moving deftly as she did my toes, while someone else worked on my hands. “I’m sure you would like this after I’m done.” She said and I just nodded, thinking about whether or not this was a dream. Her toes were painted in cute pale pink nail polish, and like the rest of her, her long legs were soft. For a brief second, I imagined them around my face. Minus the stockings. Straightening up to my full height, I peered down at her as she gaped up at me, her pupils dilated. I swallowed hard, picking up the ballet pink polish. I painted her nails carefully, making sure each one was perfect. Thea held her hands still, watching with rapt attention as the nearly-nude polish transformed her fingertips. Just for fun, I added a touch of glitter to the top of hers, and added some to mine as well. When I was finished, she admired them in the lamplight, turning her hands this way and that.

I laugh, genuinely, for the first time in what feels like forever. The nail salon is bright, sleek, and smells of acetone and citrus lotion. Calming music hums through the space as we’re greeted and shown to two side by side stations. Valerie takes the chair first, flipping through polish colors like she’s curating a masterpiece. I settle in next to her, the thrifted book already open in my lap.

She says I shove her and we both laugh. By the end I have teal painted nails with my ring finger on both sides painted black (I really never understood the point of this style, but she loves it so whatever) and my toenails painted the same except my big toe is painted teal while the little ones are painted black. I painted her nails all neon pink with the ring finger on both hands painted white, same as her toenails except her big toe painted pink all the little ones painted white.

the nail tech asked. I looked over at Mer. “What do you think? Something soft and classy?” She nodded. “Nude or blush pink. It’ll go with your dress.” I smiled and nodded. “Blush pink, please. And short. I don’t want to scratch the babies.” As the nail techs got to work, buffing and shaping, Mer leaned toward me. “You know, you’re glowing even more now than you were before we left.” I laughed. “I think it’s the sugar scrub.”
