I stretched out my hand to grab one — a dark hardback with gold letters — but before my fingers could touch it, his hand closed over mine— firm, warm, possessive.
“That one,” he murmured— he took the book from me instead— “is The Poppy War.”
He flipped it open with ease, like the pages belonged to him— like he knew every content of what each page held. Then, his voice dropped, low and smooth as he recited:
