He made different voices for each animal—the elephant’s deep trumpet, the monkey’s high chatter. Alice howled with laughter at the monkey, clapping her little hands. I stepped closer, drawn in despite myself. “You’re really good at that,” I said quietly.

Her fingers paused for a moment inside the pocket’s fabric—her fingertips touched two things: paper and rubber. One was the butterfly that Olivia had drawn for her, and the other was the dinosaur that Daniel no longer wanted. Her fingers emerged from her pockets and hung down beside her body. The tips of her fingers touched the edge of the stone steps. The rough surface of the stone scraped against her fingertips, producing a “squeak” sound.

I shake my head and move on. Walking to the wall where I saw the picture moving, I feel around. At first, it seems like an ordinary wall. But then, I realize there’s a slight separation between panels. This doesn’t seem right. Looking at the bookshelves close by, I begin to tip books up, looking for the strangest ones first, the most worn ones, the biggest ones. I pull on a book that says, “How to Win at War,” and I hear the creaking noise again.

Pulling herself from the chair, she pushed open her room door, taking small steps on the pristine floors of the L-shaped stairs. Like the typical sound of the sleek BMW she was used to hearing. Like a new favorite sound of hers.

Evelina pulled a book out of her bag that she borrowed earlier in the school library. BAM!!! The thumping sound of the book she put on her desk, sounded very loud because the book was quite heavy and thick. Evelina checks the book and she realizes that she borrowed so much. She didn’t expect that the books borrowed by her were enough. So, no wonder Rissa commented on this morning. “Let’s see what books I just borrowed ...,” murmured while sorting out the book. “There’s a Sherlock Holmes novel, Her Last Word, A Time Return, ... and finally you’re my butterfly?”
