I nod my head, eyes fluttering as I’m hit with another wave of euphoric magic. Brax yanks on one last wire and the engine coughs to life. It’s not much, but it looks like it’ll at least get us out of here. “In, in, in,” he chants, gesturing toward the open door and bouncing on his toes. His eyes scan the tree line, but I don’t bother pointing out that the forest has us covered.

Most people never looked up high enough to find it. Hours slipped by before I spotted the telltale vines spiraling up a thick trunk. Whispering a prayer to the god of luck, I climbed a neighboring tree and eased onto a sturdy branch. Hooking my bowstring around the branch with the plant, I drew it carefully toward me, thighs aching from the strain. Slowly, I plucked a few flowers and leaves, then released the branch without tearing its fragile roots. My satchel felt heavier with the prize tucked safely inside.

Nova said. “The south signal,” he said. He was very still. “It’s not just one.” He looked at her. “I’ve been reading it as one because it’s coherent — it moves as a unit. But it’s not one.” He paused. “It’s many. The same way the third branch was seven people but felt like one when they were moving together.” He held her gaze. “The southern branch is large.” “How large?” Jax said. Ryder looked at the ceiling.

Sreeet~ The brush danced back and forward again, forming a drawing that began to take shape. Although the movements and drawings in this formation are complicated and practically formless, but once it hits 80%, the formation starts to show its shape. The lines that previously looked random begin to merge together to form a unity that cannot be explained just by looking.

“That’s it! I quit. I suck.” I turned to look at what she was making. She had gotten 20% of the starting drawing right, but in time lost touch of everything. I laughed lightly and took the book for inspection. The pages fluttered, and behind the unfinished busy subway, I saw a few more colourful drawings and sketches. I turned the page, and was greeted by the sight of a huge green tree. At first glance it looked really majestic. Because all you will notice at first are the thick heavy branches. But in time, when you keep looking, you will see the differences.

I turned my hand over and held on. Across the camp, at the edge of the treeline, a single branch moved. No wind. Nothing visible. Just the branch, swaying once. Then still. It was still there. And it was done waiting.

I listened closely and tried to count the footsteps. There’s a few of them, ten or so, maybe more. But I can’t pinpoint if they are the heavy strides of wolf's feet, or the smaller thumps of human feet. Perhaps a mixture of both, maybe that’s why it sounds different.
