A giant creature emerged from beneath the trees. It had the body of a wolf. But it was enormous. Its fur was white. Its eyes were red. And around its neck was a metal collar covered in ancient symbols. Selene stepped backward. "What is that?" Daniel whispered: "The Realm Guardian." Adrian appeared behind them. "No." He looked at the creature. "It's awake." The creature opened its mouth. A roar shook the entire forest. Luna raised her hands. "Everybody back!" The creature charged. Daniel transformed.

Gasps rippled through both armies at once. It looked nothing like a wolf. Two curved horns rose from its skull, and black scales covered its face instead of fur. Silver chains wrapped around its neck like collars built for something the size of a mountain. Its eyes stayed closed. It looked old in a way that made the word ancient feel small. Older than kingdoms. Older than memory. *** The First Blade flared with sudden brilliant light, bright enough to wash across the whole battlefield. The creature stopped climbing. Slowly, its enormous head turned toward Ariana. Its eyes stayed shut, but something about it had clearly noticed her.
