He smiled apologetically as he took the cup. "Xander, who else knew that you were attacking today?" I asked, wanting to get to the bottom of this just as much as he did. Xander let out a deep breath. "No one. Just the Betas. And when they summoned their people, they told them to report for training." I nodded. "So, who won?" But I knew well that there were no clear winners in war. And this was clearly a war between shifters and Hunters. "We did, but Rush Balista escaped again." Xander shook his head. "He was tipped off."

I hesitantly accepted and dropped it after one hurried shake of our arms. He immediately turned his back to me and began heading to the center of the sparring ring. When he pivoted around I momentarily caught a glimpse of the back of his neck. I was taken aback when I spotted not one, but a plethora of Molnija marks, small tattoos shaped like lightning bolts coming together in an X. Each tattoo signified a Strigoi kill and was usually accompanied by our Guardian insignia upon entry of service. Many Guardians kept their hair shorter or pulled back to show them proudly. Marcus helps up Sean and moves him toward the border. When Bridger snaps, someone walks forward and Sean limps through the barrier to be grabbed by a warrior and helped away. The resources gotten from there are used to boost our wealth. “Isn’t that exploitation, Hansel?” I asked. “Add some respect to my name,” he said with gritted teeth. “It isn’t. This is a fair trade.”

Even now, sweat-slick and surrounded by war prep, he found a way to tease her into a smile. Some warriors, tournament survivors now that had also joined us, moved with particular precision under her command. I caught their murmurs during a water break. But Brett would feel it more. I turned and walked back toward him, where he still knelt on the floor. "Effective immediately, you are stripped of your rank as Warrior, and once the rejection ritual is completed, you're banished from this pack." Sharp gasps rang out again. "Alpha…" someone started. I glared at the pack member, and he fell silent. Brett's face had paled as he dropped to his knees. "A-Alpha, p-please, reconsider. Me, an Omega? I'm sorry…"

"Moonwhisper's rejected Luna..." "They say she burned her own mating bond..." "Look at the way she carries herself—like an Alpha..." Callista squeezed my arm as three broad-shouldered warriors materialized from the smoky haze. The tallest—a russet-haired Beta with battle scars crisscrossing his neck—leaned in with a wolfish grin. "Care for some company, lovely Luna?" His scent—pine and musk—rolled over me. Callista arched a brow. "Oh, we absolutely—"

"Dustin. Stefan. Lila. Gather our warriors. Five thousand strong. We march before dawn. We carry the fury of the Moon, the weight of prophecy, and the fire of every pack Dexter and Xavier tried to destroy." My voice dropped. "Tonight we end this."

The two warriors crashed to the earth, free but shaken. Sebastian staggered, eyes wide with rage and surprise. He snarled, driving his blade upward in a furious slash. I dropped to one knee, shielding myself with my arm. The blade carved a line of smoke across my armor. I spat blood and pain, but roared back as I righted myself and struck at his wrist. A sickening crack told me I had broken bone. He dropped the blade with an oath and staggered backward, clutching his arm.

And with all the training I had received since joining the Gamma Warrior program, I could keep my shapely body and build strength and stamina. Once I am officially 21, I can formally join the ranks of our Gamma's Warrior System. I'll try to simplify it. There are five classes in total, which are your training phase. We can start as early as 16-17 to prepare for our first shift on the first full moon after our 18th birthday—classes 1 and 2 specialized in strength, stamina, and pain endurance training.
