(Dante's POV) The wedding day was bright and sunny. The Blackwood family's private estate was a fairy-tale scene of white roses and crystal chandeliers. The guests, Chicago's elite, were all waiting for the wedding of the century. Dante stood at the altar in a custom tuxedo, handsome and imposing. Marco was beside him as his best man, occasionally glancing toward the entrance. "When is the bride arriving?" a guest whispered. "Should be any minute," Dante replied, though a flicker of unease crossed his face.

Because a future life with him would sometimes be like a battlefield, a constant uphill climb and staying glorious on the peak. The recent commotion on the street added more tension into his already tense state. He couldn’t declare himself openly as a crown prince without getting married first. That was quite stressful, not to mention the political group in the parliament who wanted to choose their own successor to the throne. All those riots could vanish instantly if he found the right woman to marry. Where to find that right woman? He asked inwardly while glaring at his cousin who in his opinion seemed indifferent and did nothing to help him.

“As long as you are alive, they will.” And then the bride’s march began. Pairs of eyes glued at the main star as she walked together with Samuel. Isaac and Eugene, the groom and bride's right hands, watched them with solemnity. Eugene does not know exactly what to feel while staring at his younger sister's wedding. He holds no satisfaction but rather, a feeling of accomplishment over a hard task. On the other side, Dwight, the bride's step-brother, precisely knew his own emotions. This isn't the first time he had his heart broken so he's familiar with this. Nevertheless, he had no choice but to sit back and suppress his pain.

I’m glad you found happiness.” With a playful wink, his blue eyes twinkled, and he locked his hand with mine.

Too practiced. Then he said it. “She’s not just a friend, Nadine . Sofia is my wife. My real wife.” My jaw clenched before my brain caught up. “What?” “She’s my real wife,” he said again. “You… you were just… filling in." A substitute, I guess.” I waited for him to laugh. For Sofia to roll her eyes and say we’re messing with you. But nothing. No punchline. No wink. No twist. Just silence. And that’s when I realized. I was the only one laughing.
