I knew we couldn't erase the abuse they'd endured, but I'd be damned if we let it continue. King Cian raised both arms, an arc of fire dancing between his palms. "We will burn the rot from this place." He flung his hands forward, the fire rolling from them in a wave, crashing over the convicted with no mercy. Beta George was the first to be hit; the force of the flames knocked him prone even as his clothes ignited. High-pitched screams pierced the air, finally fading as the fire died and left nothing but ash behind.

I could still hear her voice, trembling yet proud, confessing the unthinkable as if it were proof of her devotion. And here she was, acting like a fragile little thing, while her eyes practically screamed that she’d already won. My thoughts turned dark. I looked at Vance and wondered if this was really what he wanted. Did he want a woman who would kill her own blood just to get into his bed? And, if she could kill her own pup, what else would she do? What else would he let her do? The betrayal wasn't just him anymore. It was both of them. Standing there in my own bedroom, I felt a new kind of fire starting to burn in my chest. It wasn't love, and it wasn't pain, it was a promise of vengeance

"Burn in hell, Seraphina." Then he dropped it. Flames roared to life, swallowing the room, the heat searing my skin. My wolf's cries echoed in my skull, but worse than the pain was the betrayal. “I tried to leave. I tried… to make it right.” I felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. All this time, she had been hiding this? All this time, she had been part of the people who had caused The Burning? But there was no time to process it. No time to feel the betrayal. “Sarah,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Why—why are you telling me this now?” She smiled weakly, her hand slipping from my arm. “I’m… sorry.” And then she was gone.

When she noticed I hadn't come home after being discharged, she frowned and called me. But the only response was a message: the number was no longer in service. An inexplicable unease crept into her chest. At that moment, her assistant's call came through urgently, "Ms. Black, Mr. Ford set fire to all the patent files at the company. He left behind nothing but a voice recorder."

It was now or never and the only way to find out. "I love you too," I closed my eyes and waited for the burn searing in my tattoo. There, a slight burn, quite faint but it ended all too quickly, seared on my left chest. Was that a bad sign or a good sign? I casted my eyes downward to my left chest, to where my tattoo was. I checked surreptitiously to see if it glowed and thankfully, my button up shirt was three buttons undone so my chest was still visible. I frowned when it flickered weakly, like a busted light bulb. Was that supposed to happen? Was that supposed to glow like that? Did the curse break that confession?
