Not from me this time. From something outside. Kael noticed too. His expression darkened.

"It... it was Ca…" Before the name could fully leave Maeve's tongue, a glowing red-hot silver steel pierced him. Kaelen had drawn his sword in a blur, driving the blade straight through the center of Maeve’s chest. The steel pierced his ribs and sides, the tip exploding out of his back, with blood gushing out from his mouth. His eyes widened, the sound that escaped him was animalistic.

Luna stared at the enormous creature. “That thing could swallow you whole.” “Then I’ll make it choke,” Kael replied. The beast lunged. Kael moved faster than Luna had ever seen. His blade flashed upward, slicing across the creature’s front leg. The enchanted steel burned against the shadowy flesh, leaving a glowing wound. The beast roared. Black smoke burst from the injury. But instead of falling, the creature only grew angrier. “Oh good,” Luna muttered. “It heals.” The beast swung one massive claw.

“We don’t fear you.” The being tilted its head. The blade between its hands pulsed. “Then bleed. Inside Kael’s chest, Blade went from a snarl to a roar. The wolf surged, hackles fully raised, demanding blood for the insult. Kael shifted his stance, weight grounding, readying himself despite every instinct screaming that this was the worst possible place for blood. The room was tipping. The air was thick enough to choke on.

Her words anchor me, my hymn rising, “Veil, guide me.” Kael confronts Dren in a chasm, their void-blades clashing, sparks illuminating the abyss. “You’ve betrayed the Veil!” Kael growls, his aura steadying, his faction rallying behind him. Dren’s rebels falter, their Overveil-tainted blades dimming, but Dren’s voice snarls, “The abyss will bury you!” Kael’s blade strikes true, felling Dren, his faction’s rebellion crumbling. Kael turns to me, voice gruff. “We’re with you, Aelys—for good.” His Shadowkin regroup, their void-blades aligning, loyalty solidified.

It was not war. It was soul. Seren’s hand hesitated. “You’re dying,” she said again. “I’m choosing how,” Kael whispered. “Let me.” He drew his blade, its hilt marked by teeth worn down by generations of warriors. It wasn’t ceremonial. It was real. The blade that had carved through Dustborn at the Hollow War. The blade that had once guarded Seren’s mother. He didn’t wait for permission. Kael sliced his palm open, the wound deep and jagged.

The blade absorbed every drop and turned black. Then Cael entered with dead eyes and a walk that didn't belong to him. Elle screamed. Nova threw her magic at him. Neither worked. He sent Nova into the stone wall and Elle across the floor after her. Blood ran from Nova's hairline as she staggered up, reaching for the dagger with her magic, pulling with everything she had left. Cael knelt toward it, hand open, fingers reaching. Jax came through the door at a dead run and threw himself at Cael.
