The Royal Shadow Series will consist of 9 books, and then the saga will be complete. Part of the saga is also the anthology A Court of Arcane Souls, which features short stories based on side characters readers wanted to read more about, but these stories are not available on the book apps, nor will they ever be; they are exclusive to my subscription platform. The traps were all designed to keep higher and lower shadows out. Ava got through to the other side a bit out of sorts, but alive. With no time to spare puzzling over Kunz’s decisions, she kept moving down the short distance between the traps and the massive double doors leading into the inner chamber. Relief flooded her when Ava found the Book of Shadows inside a glass case. The gauntlet she had to face coming in would have deterred anyone, even members of the Order, from getting through. Knowing Kunz’s tricks gave her the edge. It would seem the King was not trusting of his counterparts. She was making her way out when she heard a faint noise. Against her better judgment, she followed it.

The thing Aldric noticed first about the way the vampire court related to Dravon was the absence of fear. He'd been expecting something else. The order's descriptions of vampire society had emphasised hierarchy — dominance, submission, the raw power-structure of predators in proximity. What he saw instead was something more complicated and, frankly, more interesting. The court operated the way courts everywhere operated: on a mixture of genuine regard, political calculation, and the particular loyalty of people who had survived something terrible together and attributed their survival, in part, to the person leading them.
