"The stone is not finished. And I refuse to drop to my knee in a house I do not own." Elena turned her head. Her dark eyes met mine. A knowing smile curved her mouth. She didn't argue. She rested her hand over mine on her lap. Her fingers traced my knuckles. The tension in my chest uncoiled. Caleb stepped out of the shadows. Sweat beaded on his forehead. Dust coated the shoulders of his suit jacket. He carried a leather duffel bag. He bypassed the Viti perimeter guards. He ignored Don Viti's questioning glare and marched straight to my chair. He looked like a man delivering a live grenade.

I used the moment to break free and lunged for the hearth. I grabbed the necklace with my bare hand. The fire scorched the back of my hand, but I felt nothing. I crushed the necklace against my chest and smothered the flames with my body. Luckily, only a small part of it was blackened. I collapsed to the floor, curled around what I was protecting. My hair was a mess, my clothes torn, the back of my hand burned black. Slowly, I lifted my head. Leo had been about to kick me, but the look in my eyes made him freeze in place.

Caleb walked into the local police station, Sam by his side, grim-faced as he thought of the business that lay before him. He was determined to confront that predator Kyle, the man who had tried to harm his daughter. He needed to look him in the eye, to know if all of this was nonsense, or if Scarlet had, indeed, truly turned Kyle into a vampire.

Kaleb’s feet hit the stone and he froze in anticipation. Danica had reached out to grab him but missed him as he jumped across. They stood in silence for several seconds waiting to see if anything happened. Kaleb looked over at Danica who was wided eye with concern. He shrugged at her. “Kaleb, are you freaking kidding me! We had no clue what was going to happen and you just go for it!” Danica said yelling and flapping her arms at him as she did.

Caleb’s remaining wolves surged forward. They grabbed his limp body and dragged him backward. One of them met my eyes for a second then looked away fast. They fled toward the broken gates like the cowards they were. Smoke still rose from the tunnels. Howls echoed in retreat.
