"Where the hell are we?" Caleb didn’t answer. He slumped against the damp brick wall of the basement, his breath rattling in his chest. The air down here tasted like wet earth and rotted wood. A single, naked bulb flickered overhead, casting long, jagged shadows that danced across his bruised face. I sat on a splintering wooden crate, my hands tucked between my knees to stop the shaking. "Caleb. Answer me." "Safe," he grunted. He coughed, spitting a glob of thick, copper-tasting phlegm onto the dirt floor. "For an hour. Maybe two. The digital footprint ends at the canal. They’re hunting ghosts now."

The hallway was filled with chaos—shouts, the crackling of fire, the distant smell of wood burning. “My God, did you burn down the whole building?” I coughed, the thick smoke clawing at my throat. Caleb didn’t even flinch. “It was the easiest distraction,” he said, pulling me forward. “Now move, unless you want to go up in flames with it.” I didn’t need to be told twice. Follow me. And no matter what—don’t stop running.” Before I could respond, Caleb took off. His speed was unreal, a blur of motion that no human could match.

Quincy hopped in the passenger seat and teased, “Caleb, I didn’t expect you to be the type that would spray perfume your car.” Caleb smiled lightly. He glanced at Quincy, started the engine, and drove away. Suddenly, Quincy felt dizzy and passed out. The same happened to Thea in the back seat. She fell back into the seat after falling unconscious. Caleb tore off the human mask and became a rather hideous-looking man. He took out his phone and called the Black Snake. “I have them. Where should I bring them now?” “You have people on your tail. Head to the suburbs and pass by the Nine Dragons Tunnel. I’ll try to block them off there.”

"They’ll find me soon. Hurry up." Then the line cut. "Dammit," I muttered, gripping the wheel tighter and flooring the gas. We arrived at Pier 17, an industrial dock lined with rusting shipping containers and flickering streetlights that barely lit the vast, empty space. The air smelled of salt and oil, the wind carrying a faint chill. Caleb stood beside his car, gripping the flash drive in one hand and a gun in the other. His face was tense, sweat glistening on his forehead. "You weren’t lying," he muttered.

When they reached the floating terrace, the cloud bumped gently against the landing stones. “Here we are.” Caleb turned to her, smiling. “Operation Peace Offering.” Seraphine took a deep breath. “Thanks, Caleb. Really.” He shrugged. “No problem. I’ll head back before anyone sees me here, don’t want rumors that I’m fraternizing with the elite.” She smirked. “You already are.” “Touché,” he said with a wink, stepping back onto the cloud. “Good luck, Sera. Don’t summon another hurricane in there, yeah?”

“Ready to ford it?” “I don’t think we have much of a choice, although I hadn't really planned on wading today.” “Come on, let’s go.” Caleb hurried her across the stony bank and pulled her into the icy water. They started to cross the creek, taking it easy over the moss-covered stones while the bear lumbered toward them. As soon as Caleb felt his feet slipping out from under him, he released Diana so he wouldn’t pull her down with him, but she lost her balance anyway and they both fell into the creek.

The wave was gaining, and there was nowhere to go but deeper into the maze of tunnels. Ahead, the passage forked. Dominic hesitated for only a second before pulling me to the left. The ground tilted upward, and for a brief moment, I dared to hope we were outrunning the flood. But then a shadow loomed in the tunnel ahead—a figure stepping out of the darkness. Caleb. He stood there, his face twisted into a smug grin, holding a flare that bathed the tunnel in an eerie red glow. “Going somewhere?” he drawled, his voice dripping with malice.

Alexa's hands were shaking. When she spoke, her face and voice trembled. "Caleb is gone. He's gone." She set the medical report down on the bed. "He took a wound for me at the border. I never even knew. He bled through his bandages in my front yard and I called him weak and threw him out in the rain." Her voice broke completely on the last word.
