She turned to face the small gathering that had assembled around us, Harold, Sarah, Peter, my father, enough of an audience that I understood, immediately, this wasn't meant to be private.
"A year ago," my mother said, her voice carrying easily, "I helped arrange a marriage I believed, at the time, was simply a sensible business decision for both our families.
