I said, “But I did not apply for any lottery.” “Are you a regular purchaser of Captain’s Cereal?” “Yes. I do buy them a lot.” I said. “Captain's Cereal is our partner company. Every year they conduct this lucky draw for their most loyal customers. Every year someone wins and this year, it happened to be you.” My head was getting dizzy. So that money is… really mine? I hung up on the phone and ran straight into the men's locker room. I need to see Elijah!

“Prize?” “Yeah,” she says, eyes sparkling like she’s sharing state secrets. “You either get a big cash reward or a job. If you don’t already work for Valcour International, they’ll find a way to fix you in. If you don’t want the job, you take the money. And even if you have a job, you can still take the money. End of the day...winner walks away with either a fat paycheck or a solid position.” I grab her wrist, staring at the screen like it’s a golden ticket. “Wait, you’re serious? At the annual party, the organizer held a raffle box and let us draw lots one by one. Watching the company prosper made me incredibly proud. I casually unfolded the paper and couldn't believe my luck. I won the grand prize—a three-day trip to Marosa! I could either get reimbursed for the trip afterward or have 50 thousand dollars added to my paycheck. To support Vincent Cosby's startup, I hadn't even asked my family for a single cent all year. 50 thousand dollars was certainly no small sum to me.

The voice of the emcee echoed loudly, and the crowd fell into a hush. As the pointer dropped, the crowd’s eyes widened in anticipation. Ding! Finally, the pointer stopped moving. “Congratulations Mr. Crawford, on winning the Mercedes-Benz G500 prize worth 300,000 dollars! Let’s give him a huge round of applause!” The host yelled in excitement. “Ahhhh!!!” The crowd screamed. Of course, the winners for the other prizes were all by random, but as for the main prize, Mr. Crawford was set to win it even though he may not have appreciated it.

My shift will end soon. And I still I have to finish my final draft for the writing contest! It’s due next week. I thought. I joined the “Writer's Luck” contest to win $700. Not only that, you'll be an automatic member of an elite book club called “The Golden Phoenix” wherein you will meet many personalities and big people.
