Cassie didn’t need anyone to tell her that she was looking at Sapphire. She had smooth ivory skin which was marked only by a few tattoos that were poking out of her outfit. She wore a large coat which could have been okay with the walls of Tech Town but was probably not the smartest outfit choice considering the weather outside. Her brown eyes were the same light shade as her hair and both hair and eyes looked absolutely wild. Her crimson nails appeared badly chipped and chewed. She crossed her arms under her bust and frowned at Cassie. “Where is he?!” She snarled.

I answered seriously, “A few days ago, Luke and I went rock climbing. I slipped and cut myself on a stone ledge. The doctor suggested using a wheelchair to help my legs heal faster. It’s nothing serious.” At my mention of Luke, Casey’s expression immediately darkened. He gave a cold snort. “Serves you right.” During dinner, I used a spoon to sip my oatmeal slowly. Afraid of spilling, I leaned close to the bowl, sipping carefully. Casey observed me a few times before asking, “Do you think that’s cute or something?” He frowned, then added, “Your face is practically buried in the bowl. Are you a three-year-old?”

“Selena.” He smiled again. “Pretty name.” And then “Selena!” Cassie’s voice cut through everything like a sharp knife. She appeared out of nowhere, moving fast, a flash of red silk and too much perfume. “There you are,” she said sweetly, wrapping her hand around my arm. Her tone was calm, but I could feel the pressure in her grip. Then she turned her full charm on Damien. “Damien Roth,” she said like she already knew him. “I’ve been dying to meet you.”

“I’m a chef by profession, a fitness coach, an entrepreneur, and, in case you don’t know, the CEO of CasRoe Wellness Center.” The words hung in the air, silencing both women. Angel blinked, checking her phone in disbelief. “You? But you look different in your videos. I’m not a fan of CasRoe, but some of my friends are.” Cassie shrugged. Angel looked like one of those people who could eat endlessly and remain impossibly thin. “Well, nature has favored you with a thin figure,” Cassie said lightly. “Now cook for Mom. Can’t you see she’s hungry?”
