“Someone takes good care of them.”
“Miguel,” Eleanor said. “Twenty years.”
“It shows,” Daniel said. And then Vivienne was in the doorway.
Eleanor had prepared herself for the look. She had not prepared Daniel for it, partly because she couldn’t describe it adequately and partly because she believed — she believed in him — that he didn’t need preparation. But she watched for it anyway, the moment her mother’s eyes landed on him and performed their rapid unconscious audit: origin, bearing, relation to money, whether he knew it, whether he pretended he didn’t, whether he performed his lack of it or inhabited it.
