Diana’s eyes rolled back. She nearly fainted. She scrambled toward the brazier, ignoring the heat, digging frantically through the ashes. "My money! That was my money! One million! What have I done?!" Her hands blistered from the heat, but she kept clawing through the ashes, wailing. I watched her coldly, then took out the red velvet box she had thrown aside earlier. "And this." I opened it and took out the pair of gold bangles she had dismissed as cheap junk. "Caleb, read them the certification."

Gilded cage. Each word is a nail he has driven into my pride. He thinks he knows everything. He thinks he sees the extent of my soul through the veneer of my skin. He is wrong. He has never understood that this beauty is not a cage. It is a battlefield I chose. My first weapon.

I hadn't just freed myself; I had declared war on two men who didn't know how to lose. I walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. The steel shutters had retracted, revealing a Manhattan that looked like a graveyard of lights. I caught my reflection in the glass. My hair was a mess, my skin was bruised, and my eyes—once soft and full of dreams—now looked like shards of flint. I reached out and touched the glass. I am no longer the bird, I whispered to the ghost in the reflection. I am the cage. The chime of the private elevator made me spin around, my heart leaping into my throat. Killian’s threat echoed in my mind—I'll be out by morning. But it was too soon.

Waking up in a beautiful cage does not make it any less of a prison. It only makes the bars feel softer while they close in around you. My head throbbed with a dull, heavy pain as I slowly opened my eyes. The room around me was luxurious in a cold, calculated way. Soft golden lighting glowed from hidden fixtures. There was a large bed with silk sheets, expensive furniture arranged perfectly, and even a small sitting area with books and fresh flowers. But there were no windows. No natural light. The door was heavy steel disguised to look like polished wood. I sat up carefully on the edge of the bed and realized my wrists were no longer tied, but I was definitely locked in.

"Let him follow. I want him to see exactly where I’m going. I want him to know that the 'poor girl' he married lives in a world he can't even enter without an invitation." The limo pulled up to the grand entrance of the St. Claire Estate. The gates were tall and made of gold. They opened slowly, as if recognizing their true owner had finally returned. As the limo rolled up the long driveway, Julian’s car tried to follow, but the security guards stepped out and blocked his path. Ivy stepped out of the car. The servants were lined up, bowing low. "Welcome home, Miss Ivy," they said in one voice.

I turned away from the doors and looked at my prison. It was beautiful, in a haunting, Victorian Gothic sort of way. The bed was massive, a mountain of velvet and dark wood, hung with heavy curtains that looked thick enough to smother a person. The wardrobe was carved with intricate vines that seemed to strangle the wood. There was a dressing table with a silver mirror, but the glass was obscured by a layer of dust, as if no one had looked into it for decades. A gilded cage. The phrase spun in my head. Gold leaf on the bars didn't stop you from being a prisoner. It just made the scenery prettier while you withered away.

The air in the grand ballroom of The Gilded Cage was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, aged bourbon, and the heavy, metallic tang of desperation. It was a room where the city’s elite gathered to trade in secrets and souls. High-vaulted ceilings were covered in gold leaf, reflecting the harsh glare of the crystal chandeliers onto the men below—the tycoons, the investors, and the silent shadows of the city’s political machinery. They sat in velvet-lined booths, their faces half-hidden by the dim lighting, looking less like gentlemen and more like wolves circling a fresh kill.

“I don’t think she knew she was doing it. I don’t think she’s a bad person. But I felt, by the end, like a piece she’d collected.” Eleanor thought about this. She thought about Preston, the man she’d been engaged to first — the jaw, the shipping lanes, the interior life of a parking garage. She thought about the French count. She thought about the long line of people who had wanted to be near her wealth or her name or her access, who had wanted her as context, as setting, as the background against which their own life would read better. “I know something about that,” she said quietly. He looked at her. “I know you do,” he said. “That’s why I’m telling you.”

Then I turned around and left, leaving the little devil behind in her new cage. A.
