I turn and later hear a splash. "You can look now," she shouts, and then before I know it, we are both in the water. After our date, we talk for a very long time. We stay till midnight to watch the stars. We drive back home and stop in front of her house.

Maia sat in the corner of the dusty attic she called home. Some floorboards were missing, leaving dark holes. There was only one very simple square window in the back that overlooked the street below. It had been tinted so you could see out but no one could see in. She hugged her legs and a thin blanket closer, hoping to feel even slightly warmer. Even the rats, who usually scurried around the room and kept her company were nowhere to be seen. She wore a gray dress that hung just above her knees. It once reflected the light every time she moved and highlighted her green eyes. Now it was dull and full of holes, highlighting nothing more but her neglect and abuse.

Snowshade stood and drew a thick bundle of record-crystals from her enchanted ring. She crossed to Garrick and the others and let them fall from her hand. They struck the floor with a clatter and spread open. Etched across them in glowing script were dense lists of crimes, each one more sickening than the last. "This... what is this..." Garrick picked up one crystal with trembling fingers. A single glance, and his face went deathly pale. "They robbed a wandering mage of his relic, just because the material suited a circlet for Lucian Clegane?"
