Catching Fire Chapter 14 Novels & Stories

"The building we were in—it caught fire. I don’t even know how it started. Maybe it was an accident, or maybe it was some of the raiders. It doesn’t matter. All I know is that one minute we were together, and the next...." I trailed off, my hands trembling in my lap. My mind was back in that burning building, the smoke so thick I couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe. I could still hear Chloe’s voice, calling out to me, begging me to save her. But I hadn’t been fast enough. I hadn’t been strong enough. "I tried to get to her," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I really tried. But the fire—it was too much. I couldn’t... I couldn’t reach her."

Because literally nothing about this night was making sense. But the house was getting a little cold since the power kept going out. She should make a fire probably. Still.. she agreed. And told him to hold on while she took one of the candles and made her way into the kitchen to get another glass. When she came back into the living room Evan had taken it upon himself to start a fire. She poured both of them drinks and handed one to him. He threw it back quickly as she continued to sip on hers. He pointed at the bottle questionably so she poured him another glass.

4 Claire was a bubbly cheerful girl. Since her parents weren’t around at the moment, the house was filled with constant laughers. I excused myself when Sebastian and Claire started staring at each other like they wanted to eat each other’s face and I wasn’t in for something X-rated.

“HELLO? IS ANYONE OUT THERE? OPEN THE DOOR!” Silence. No footsteps. No maid. That maid… she had only closed the door. She hadn’t locked it. Or had she? Panic rose up, thick and choking, just like the smoke now flooding the room. My dress caught on fire, the edges crackling like paper. I screamed, stumbled back, tried to beat it out, but the heat was unbearable. I was coughing, my throat burning. Nobody was coming. And then… everything went black. ★★★

My eyes are burning, and my chest hurts. Molly is not here either. I went to check on the second floor. The fire is deadly here. The flames are high, blocking my way. The smell of gasoline is strong. I now know Molly is here, but I am unable to enter the room. "Molly…" I call out to her. She is not answering me. This terrifies me. Several bad thoughts rush into my mind. "I will take you out of here," I grunt as I take a few steps back. I sprint and take a leap. I successfully cross the flames, but fire catches me on the legs and back.

“Come back. Just hold on to me. I’ll take the fire. I’ll carry it if I have to. But don’t leave me.” For a second, just a breath, I felt heat sliding against my own skin, not burning but settling like it wanted to rest in me. His fire was brushing against my voice, clinging to it. The girl gasped softly. “It’s listening again.” My chest tightened, both terrified and desperate. If his fire really clung to me, then maybe I could call it back each time. Maybe that was the only thread holding him here. Before I could answer, a branch snapped in the distance.

," I coughed and begged but she didn't stop in her tracks. She continued walking until she got to the door and locked it, not giving me a chance to escape. I stared at the locked door, panic surging through my veins. The flames danced and roared, devouring everything in their path. The air grew thick with smoke, making it harder and harder to breathe. Each labored breath felt like a futile struggle against the encroaching darkness. I stumbled back, the intensity of the fire pushing me away from the window. Every cough sent searing pain through my chest as if my lungs were being scorched from the inside out. Desperation flooded my mind as I realized there was no way out. I was trapped in this

Chapter: 14 ****** "No!" Phoenix cried from behind them, he willed water on the burning room but the fire kept growing. "Stop, Leonardo!" He pleaded, making his way through flames towards them but the fire was great. "You're going to hurt you both?" His words of warning fell on deaf ears. When he reached both men their bodies were already filled with flames that surged from one body into the other. The brightness of the room grew into the sky, darkening the day, and turning it into night.

I raise my own, calling wind, desperate to push the flames back. But it doesn't respond like normal fire. It screams. We fight it anyway. It takes both of us, our powers colliding and twining, to push down the inferno until the fire chokes on ash and gives out. Smoke curls around us, thick and stinging. We’re panting, both of us covered in soot. I stare at the scorched bark. "It reacted to you," I whisper. Scarlett drops to her knees. "I didn’t mean to. I swear I didn’t-"

My eyes snap open and my hands are on fire. Silver fire. The flames curl around my fingers like vines, weightless and bright. They flicker with light, not heat, and my heart stutters. Everyone is silent. Rhea stares, eyes wide with something between wonder and fear. "She’s doing it," she whispers. The flames ripple higher, sliding up my arms. They don’t hurt. They hum. Like they know me. I breathe. And that’s when it all goes wrong. The fire flares, too fast, too much. It jumps from my arms to the air around me. Moonstones crack. Wind whips across the courtyard. I hear someone shout. Rhea’s voice calling my name. The Elders moving. And then-
