Because from her side, that’s exactly what happened. Catherine wipes at her face roughly before turning away again. “I’m done, Clinton.” “Please.” I hate how broken my voice sounds. Really hate it. But I can’t help it anymore. Richard’s dead. Catherine hates me. Everything keeps falling apart so fast I can barely catch my breath between disasters. She starts walking again. This time, I force myself not to follow. Every instinct inside me screams to stop her somehow. Get on my knees. Block the road. Beg harder.

The kind caused by exhaustion more than sadness. “I’m tired of feeling shut out by somebody who keeps asking me to stay,” she admitted. Malik looked back at her sharply then.
