“Go, Gina! I’ll catch up with you guys!”
I pulled out the camping LED and turned it on to its max. It shone white and bright in the shadows under the trees, and it helped me spot a window on the first floor with its wire mesh screen ripped off the frame and curling out, almost at the other end. I ran to that window. The perks of being petite: if I left my backpack outside, I didn’t need to pull the screen further off the frame, because the gap was just enough for me to sneak in.
I ran down the ruined hallway, littered with big chunks of debris from walls and ceiling. I remembered Hugo’s crate in my backpack, but I had no time to perform the whole ritual to seal the building.
