"I'd think everyone at this table would prefer steady to chaotic, given everything this family's just been through."
"Define chaotic," said a board member near the end of the table, older, quieter, someone I didn't recognize. "The stock hasn't moved in either direction all week."
"Give it time."
"That's not an answer, Warrick."
"Chaotic," I said, before I'd fully decided to speak. "That's an interesting word for a family that's been navigating a medical emergency."
Every head at the table turned toward me.
"Mrs. Ashford." Warrick's voice carried the particular condescension of a man addressing someone he hadn't expected to speak at all. "This is a company matter."
