As Jack left the house, his mind was still consumed by thoughts of Celicia and the plan he had just discussed with Brianna. He couldn't shake the feeling of urgency, knowing that they needed to act quickly to rescue her from Michael's clutches. Arriving at the Mystique cafe, Jack was greeted by the bustling atmosphere of the busy establishment. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and the sound of clinking dishes filled the air, adding to the cozy ambiance of the cafe. Daniel was busy behind the counter, meticulously preparing drinks and overseeing the staff. Jack watched as Daniel barked out orders to the waitstaff, his authoritative tone leaving no room for argument.

They sat on the front porch praying not to get interrupted by the others. William with no cooking ability whatsoever ordered dinner from the most famous restaurant in town. Reign completely forgot about the whole leaving thing when the snow storm was over for the holiday. Each time the roads clear for her to head to the other side of town, another snow storm starts. I opened the door and waited for Mia to walk in first. We were met by a hostess working at the front. She escorted us to a table in the back of the restaurant. The restaurant was quaint and it had a certain charm to it that made me feel at home. There were candles lit all around and jazz music playing quietly in the background. “Thank you.” I said to Mia once we were seated. “For what?” She asked, confused. “For trusting me with that.” I answered. “It couldn’t have been easy to share.” “Oh.” Mia said, avoiding eye contact. “You’re welcome, I guess.”

“I know a place nearby. Quiet. No reporters. No investors lurking behind wine barrels.” Mia grinned. “Already a green flag.” The drive was short, windows down, sunlight pouring in like the world wasn’t holding its breath the way I was. The restaurant sat just off the main road—rustic, understated, the kind of place locals guarded like a secret. We settled at a wooden table near the window. “So,” Elias said once menus were set aside, “how long have you two known each other?” Mia leaned back. “Long enough to know when she’s pretending everything’s fine.”

Grace and Chloe giggled, I smiled, and Ella looked like she was smelling something that had been in the fridge for too long. “I remember the first time Mommy let me pick a restaurant,” Chloe said with a smile. “McDonald’s?” Ella asked. Chloe frowned and turned away from her to tell Mr. Cavendish, “It was the Moon Hunt Café. Have you been there?” “I have not,” he said. “You’ve missed out. They have over twenty varieties of mushrooms and all sorts of biolum, um.” She looked at me. “Bioluminescent,” I supplied. “Yeah, so the food glows. It’s really cool.”

Chase. Noon. Mystic Waters Restaurant. New York. “Sorry I’m late.” I lean in and kiss Tamara Dale on the cheek before I take the seat across from her. The restaurant hums to life around us. If she had told me the reason we came here, I believe I wouldn't have asked again. "It's the Mystic Delights. You wouldn't want to miss it for anything in the world, and it only happens quarterly," she said. "What is that?" I asked her, confused. "That's all the more reason you shouldn't miss it. Come on," she grasped my hand, pulling me inside. The cafeteria was near the residential hall, not on the school grounds. I wondered why it wasn't placed within the school premises. Even though the walk from the residential hall to the school grounds took no more than ten minutes, it still struck me as weird.

I needed another tactic. I wandered around town, looking for a place to eat while I regrouped. I had money from the pack fund—at least Elijah hadn’t denied me that—but I didn’t know how long it would take to find Frankie, and the tourist-based restaurants probably had jacked-up prices. I eyed the jambalaya restaurant with a huge mural of a shrimp riding an alligator. There was no way that place didn’t overcharge, pandering to tourists like that.
