Chapter 43 – Lance Laying my eyes on Jayler, I saw nothing but the very same innocent smile that I keep on seeing from him every now and then. It was the same smile that makes me feel lighter and less agitated. It’s the same pure smile emanating from this amiable soul that seemed to have this magical vibrancy that never fails to make me abruptly forget about the rotten things that are weighing me down. It was just a simple smile quite frankly but it was a curve destined to create a radiant sunshine that would eventually decimate the cloudy and gloomy mood that I am in.

Her lips curled into a sharp, knowing smile. “That’s fascinating, Lord Caddel. Your daughter certainly is…unique. What kind of lady arrives before His Majesty looking like a half-drowned fish?” Behind her appeared two boys—Jack and Cole, their dark eyes identical, watching me. “You look funny,” Cole mouthed at me, his grin playful. It was the smile that sparked our reckless friendship, and later, our chaotic love. A smile he reserved for me until I married Jack, then replaced by one mocking and hateful.

Especially since I have felt as if someone has been following me lately. “You will be surprised how many people are willing to tell me everything I want to know, just by smiling at them.” To prove his point, he flashed me a wide grin, showing his pearly white teeth. His smile wasn’t as impressive as Kierian’s, but it was still the kind of smile that I could believe he could get any girl to tell him what he wanted to know. I couldn’t deny that it was possible that maybe he wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. It could just be because of his smile though.

“Smile for me.” I looked at him, confused. “Smile,” he repeated. “A genuine, happy smile. Like you’re pleased to be here.” My stomach turned. I couldn’t. I couldn’t smile at this monster who’d bought me like property, who kept women as dolls, who was systematically breaking me down. “Smile, Elara.” I tried. I forced my lips to turn up at the corners, but it felt grotesque. Wrong. And it definitely wasn’t convincing.

“You’re messing with me, aren’t you? I can never tell when you do that? Why don’t you smile or something?” Why don’t you smile. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’d heart this question. I gave him the answer I always did. “I don’t smile.” Simple and short. “But you do.” I looked at him. “Excuse me?” “You do smile. When you’re stepping on the skulls of your enemies. It’s a scary sort of smile.” I shrugged. “Guess that’s the only thing that brings me joy.”

I looked at her. After a moment she said, very quietly: "It looks like her." "What does?" "His smile. It looks like what someone wears when they're happy for other people." She paused. "Isolde was kind. He's remembering how to be." We stood in the hall with the music and the noise and the pack celebrating around us and Malachar in the corner learning to smile again. Then Soren appeared at my elbow. "My feet hurt," he said. "Then stop dancing."

And then, slowly…so slowly it felt deliberate…he smiled. Not a nice smile. A dangerous one. "Or what?"

Alex reassures me with a gentle smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners in amusement. As I watch Alex, I can't help but notice how incredibly handsome he looks when he smiles. It's a rare sight, but when it graces his lips, it transforms his face, lighting up his features in a way that is both captivating and endearing. In that moment, I find myself wishing he would do it more often, allowing me to bask in the radiance of his smile. With a sheepish grin, I thank him once more, feeling a surge of appreciation for his unexpected kindness.

She raised her fist and swung it towards him, "Why should I smile?" Charles looked at her, narrowed his eyes, and pulled her into his arms. "If you won't smile, then I'll smile for you." "Haha..." Seeing him curl his lips, Maria burst out laughing, "Hahaha, your smile is so fake!" Charles frowned, "Fake?" "Yeah!" Maria pointed her finger at Luna. "You can ask Luna." Luna stared and immediately turned her face away, "Hey, don't look at me. Just pretend I'm not here."

Jacob walked behind me, his own eyes cast down, thinking about what lay beneath the mystery of my smile. Smiling gently, lips in a sweet curve, I walked alongside Jacob. My smile was the slow and deliberate kind, a slow smile spreading across my face like a sunrise sweeps across the sky. But Jacob had no idea why I smiled; the satisfaction and control I felt surged through my veins. He looked at me, seeking my eyes for an answer, but I simply continued smiling back in amusement with a glint in my eyes, savoring the moment.
