How will I prepare food now? I sigh ,at least I should fish out the ingredients I need for today's meal which was written on a piece of paper placed on the wall. "Black coffee , eggs and bacon ," I read out, staring at the paper. That's the easiest.I opened the big cupboard that made things cold and there were so many stocks that could feed me and my parents for eternity,I chuckled at my own thought ,how silly . But it was filled with so much food , some I have seen and some I haven't ,I had never seen so much stock in one house with presently just one person living in it .

I noticed he didn’t add a specific date and time to his invitation. Mother kept up her chatter. “And first editions.” She clapped her hands together. “Such a collection. Or so I’ve heard. Well, many of us have heard. A first edition of Jane Eyre, all three volumes. And Dickens, I believe you have a Dickens?” “Uh, yes, ‘Christmas Carol,’” he muttered. “Chapman and Hall, 1843.” “Think of it.” Mother turned first to my father and then to Mrs. Carville. “Imagine owning a first edition of anything by Charles Dickens, let alone ‘A Christmas Carol.’”

image he worked so hard to maintain. I closed the closet, still grinning, and wandered into his bedroom. On his nightstand I found more books, all by Fyodor Dostoevsky: Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, The Idiot, White Nights. I picked one up and flipped through it. The pages were worn, corners folded and some lines underlined. He wasn't just pretending to like this stuff, he really was a superfan of Russian literature. I didn't believe it when he first told me, but now I believed it without a doubt.

I didn't think that Allen had time for anything other than medical texts. "Find anything interesting?" he teased. "Ah, you've caught me. It's my secret obsession." "What's your secret obsession?" I replied with a teasing smile, trying not to think about my own secret obsession with another man who had probably forgotten all about me months ago. "Charles Dickens," he said with a smile. "Although, not all of Dickens. Some of his stuff is boring. But 'Great Expectations'? That's a different story, pun intended. It's incredible!"

Ethan said, granting me a dimpled smile "What does that mean?" I raised my eyebrows. "Well you know, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, they're all famous European writers." I didn't know what surprised me more, the fact that he knew all those names or that he made names of 19th and 20th-century writers sound so sensual. "What?" he spoke again, "are you surprised that I know who those writers are?" "Maybe a little." "As you said, don't judge a book by it's cover," he said, sending me a wink.

"Well, sometimes I watch T.V. I like, well, love to read. So I do that a lot when I'm alone." "Like what? Romance, crime thrillers?" I shrugged. "Sometimes. I really like the classics. Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, George Elliot (who was a woman, by the way). I also like the Russians, like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. 'War and Peace' is amazing." "You've read 'War and Peace'?" "Yeah, twice. It's excellent." I cocked my head. "How about you, what do you like to read?"

Marie said. "All literary characters." Pearl said after hearing about them. "Their names. Oliver, that's Dickens. Holden, that's Salinger. Atticus, is Harper Lee and Maisie, that's Henry James and Kipling." "Yes!" Marie smiled. "Not many catch that, I am and always have been an avid reader and lover of literature." "Same here." Pearl said. She was failing in love with his parents too. And no mention of money and no hint of billions. Ian was a liar.

Emma said, walking deep into the living room. "Thanks." She walked to a set of shelves on the far side of the room, running her fingers over the spines of his books. A lot of them were classics, novels by Dickens, Voltaire, Dumas, Melville, and Hemingway. She smiled when her fingers ran over the spine of not one, but three copies of Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. There were modern novels, too, including Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon, but they didn't look as well read as some of the others.

I was hoping that he didn’t have to go back to work so quickly, but I know his work is important, vital to the man I love and I wouldn’t want to ever change that. So, I settle in to make some coffee and skim my fingers over the bookshelves lining the walls in the spacious living room. I’ve never seen Gavin with a book in his hand and it surprises me that he has such a large collection. Charles Dickens, Ray Donovan, Marie Barnes, Nicholas Sparks, the authors range from one genre to another and somehow I know that most of these couldn’t be Gavin’s. I couldn’t imagine him reading a full length novel like Great Expectations. He thrives on action, solving problems, making strides in whatever he i

the girl observed, knowing that while everyone had their sports preferences, they shared a great passion for literature. "No way!" The older man doubted. "Young people are interested in the old and good literature still?" "My grandfather has a large library at home, and fortunately, he made my cousin and me read several classic works, and I ended up liking some of them a lot. I've read Great Expectations more than once... and also Oliver Twist. I didn't like Bleak House that much, not to say that I love everything I've read from him, but, on the other hand, probably The Old Curiosity Shop is the book I've read the most times in my life."
