In fact these books are really original, or books that are copies of the original books. Which, of course, is also old. I pulled up a book called Bleak House by Charles Dickens. One of the books was dark blue with an old engraving on its back.

He closed the door behind him and I blew some air from my mouth in a sigh. Dinner time arrived almost within the blink of an eye, and I was dumbstruck at how time quickly flew by. A lot of them were classics, novels by Dickens, Voltaire, Dumas, Melville, and Hemingway. She smiled when her fingers ran over the spine of not one, but three copies of Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. There were modern novels, too, including Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon, but they didn't look as well read as some of the others.

He said, with a chuckle. He reached out to one of the shelves and shifted some encyclopedias lying there. At the back of them were novels. He heaved them to me and by the time he was done, I had the complete Dickens collection in my arms. Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Christmas carol. Name it, they were all there. He came down looking like a proud benefactor and at that moment, he looked really cute and harmless. I even spotted a dimple on his cheeks.

Ever since he came home and started at Colossus Group, he had not spent many nights at the Hoffmans', so he had not realized they had kept the room's old charm. In the back of the room, someone guffawed. "Jane?" "I read A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens. It has 422 pages." Jane tried to say it in a matter-of-fact tone, but she couldn't keep the glee out of her voice. Then she read her page. Like Emily's, it told mainly what the book was about. But the plot of the A Tale of Two Cities was so complicated that it was that easy to summarize in a page.

And Dickens, I believe you have a Dickens?” “Uh, yes, ‘Christmas Carol,’” he muttered. “Chapman and Hall, 1843.” “Think of it.” Mother turned first to my father and then to Mrs. Carville. “Imagine owning a first edition of anything by Charles Dickens, let alone ‘A Christmas Carol.’”
