She wore pajamas with reindeer on them and a Santa hat that kept sliding off her head. "What time is it?" I groaned. "Seven. Come on, we open presents at seven thirty. Family tradition. No exceptions." She bounced out of my room, leaving me alone with my messy hair and complete lack of holiday cheer at this ungodly hour.

He's not going anywhere, remember?” That seemed to lighten up her mood and give her something to look forward to as she nodded. “Come on, let's get you two ready for bed,” I murmured, taking both their hands in mine. Never in a million years would I have predicted that day would go the way it did; if someone had told me my ex-husband would show up dressed as Santa Claus, I'd probably have laughed in the person's face.

Calvin asked when he saw how much she was lost in thoughts. "I'm fine," she told him, making an effort to smile. "I got something for you" he announced and Charlie's eyes twinkled. She seemed to come alive as she was suddenly curious about what he had gotten her. "What is it?" She asked him. "Why don't you take a seat while I get it for you?" Calvin asked and Charlene quickly obeyed. She sat down and watched him pull out a red shopping bag from behind the couch. She saw that Calvin was really taking his time. He took a seat before handing the bag to her and like a child who had been allowed to go through the Christmas presents, Charlene unwrapped her gift.
