hanging suspended, like a ripe fruit waiting to be plucked from the tree of knowledge. The cherry tree's white blooms seem to glow with an ethereal light, as if infused with the essence of the season. Stephen's gaze lingers on the blossoms, their delicate beauty a poignant reminder of life's transience. "This year, I sit here, surrounded by the same beauty," he muses, his thoughts wandering to the passage of time. "Will I be here next year, to witness the cherry tree's splendor once more? Or will I be nothing more than a memory, a name etched on one of these stones, lost to the ages?"

It was a reliable constant. "Not in the way people are," he continued. "She manages it. Actively. There's something underneath it, she's not indifferent, but what she shows is controlled rather than suppressed. The difference is in the eyes." I leaned back in my chair. Outside the window the grounds were doing what they did in late autumn, going bare and gray and cold, the kind of afternoon that arrived early and intended to stay. The trees along the east wall had dropped most of what they were going to drop. The training ground was empty at this hour. The compound was running at its usual pace around the disruption of having an unknown female in my bedroom, which was a sentence I had not an

CHAPTER 31: London in spring couldn't make up its mind. One day you'd get cherry blossoms bursting like pink fireworks against an impossibly blue sky, and the next, hail would beat down on those new leaves like the city was punishing them for being optimistic. Keira got it, her insides felt just as all over the place.

It’s early afternoon when I settle beneath a beautiful tree at the park. In spring, this place is breathtaking—full of blooming flowers and a few imported Japanese cherry trees. They’re my favorite. Cherry blossoms have always felt like a symbol of life and new beginnings. Something I needed to see after last night... and this morning’s terrifying— Dream? Is that what it was? A dream? Or a vision of what would’ve happened if I’d waited to call the police?

“And he listens. Don’t let that go unnoticed.” Her eyes met mine—hopeful, a little scared. “You think…?” “I think,” I said, gently, “sometimes people need a little nudge. But don’t rush it. Let it be slow, real. That’s what makes it last.” Zoe nodded slowly, a quiet blush rising in her cheeks. That evening, I walked home alone. The spring air had begun to soften. The sky blushed a slow pink behind glass towers. Somewhere, music played from a balcony above a bakery. The world was layered with little signs of life returning—mine included.

For a brief moment, it felt like the cherry blossoms were in full bloom again. And through the petals that swirled in his mind— He saw a little girl running toward him, smiling. --- An hour later, Caitlin and Sebastian finally arrived at Sakura Ridge. The cherry blossom season had passed—the forest was now lush and green. They walked deeper into the woods. Searching for the tree where Caitlin and her brother had played as children. Where they had picnicked with their mother. Then— "Caitlin, look over there!" Sebastian’s voice was sharp with urgency. Caitlin turned her head— And froze.

The gold flowers pulsed, and the watcher's attention was soft and warm. "Then write it," Winter said. "Write the truth. That I stayed. That is all." --- The winter came, and the garden was warm. The gold flowers glowed through the snow, their light steady and sure. The witnesses gathered around the stone bench for lessons, their faces lit by the blooms. Winter taught less now—her voice was soft, her body slow—but she still sat with the new witnesses, still showed them how to tend the flowers, and still told them the story of the garden.

I clenched my hands tighter as the pain in my palm seared. … I had no idea how long we walked for. The sun seemed to have climbed to its peak. I was finally allowed to remove the blindfold. Before me stretched a winding, narrow path that ended in a bottomless cave. Beside it stood a towering, ancient tree. Its scent of osmanthus drifted even from afar. The villagers said the tree had absorbed the essence of countless Blossom Brides. That was what made it so tall and fragrant. When we were thirty feet away from the cave, the procession abruptly stopped.

Sutburg was filled with flowers in spring, petals flying toward us in the wind, pink, white, and many other colors. Some flowers landed on my shoulder, and I thought to myself that I had made it through winter. And finally, my spring was here.

"Edward, please collect the pieces of that book and make sure that every last page is burned." As we step into the valley and make our way through all the cherry blossom trees, I know that this shall be the parting scent that I shall know my beloved as. But what moves me beyond the beauty of their pink flowers is the rows of fairies that bid us farewell as we leave. They, too, do not know my beloved, but my beloved is receiving their blessing into the world beyond. One small tear escapes my eye; I believe these shall become frequent for a long time, if not forever.
