Chains Of The Heart
Chapter Ten
I step outside the ballroom, air stinging against my skin. The chill wraps around me, sharper than the hum in my stomach. My heels click on the pavement, echoing through the night, with every step away from the music and laughter that sound like mockery of my pain.
I wrap my arms around myself, trying to ward off the cold, but it's no use. The freezing wind isn't outside but inside me, solidifying my heart and making my thoughts leaden and slow. I came tonight to support Noah, to be with him. Instead, I feel like an afterthought, a shadow in his life.
