Cinderella and Her Three Knights
I remembered twirling, holding my skirt out.
“Look at me,” I’d said. “I’m a princess.”
A woman knelt, smiled politely, then walked past me to another child.
I remembered the corner. The cold wall. The tears.
“Princesses don’t cry,” one boy had said.
“No one wants her,” another girl laughed.
I hugged my knees tighter now, years later, the ache still sharp.
“I just wanted to be chosen,” I whispered.
My eyes burned as the memory faded.
I turned off the phone, curled onto my side, and eventually drifted into sleep.
