" As she regains more consciousness, she can smell the aroma of pancake and beef coming from the kitchen and her stomach growl. She gets down from the bed and races downstairs to where the kitchen is. She finds Ken in a black singlet and a white apron tied to his neck. He’s standing before the drying pan with a bowl of red meat in it. She waltzes over to him, wrapping her arms around his midsections and feeling the muscles built up there. She pressed small kisses all over his arm and upper shoulder, and she felt him shudder against her in return. “Good morning. You were sleeping soundly when I left the bed. I didn’t want to wake you, so I thought I would make breakfast.”

“Let’s go before she drags us there by force.” We end up at a little neon-lit shop on the corner, sticky floors and rainbow sprinkles everywhere. Kenzie orders something violently pink with gummy worms sticking out. Claire gets mint chocolate chip, Aaron orders plain vanilla—of course he does—and I go for cookies and cream, which immediately wins me “coolest grown-up” status with Kenzie.

"But first, eat. You need food to keep you going." I nodded and took a deep breath, knowing this wasn't going to be the last of his teasing, but I accepted the reprieve. I took a bite of the French toast and had to admit it was perfect. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with just the right amount of cinnamon.
